This is a discussion worth having. Affirmative actions laws were necessary when they first came into existence, but I feel that they have become outdated and are now becoming discriminatory. There is no reason that people of Asian backgrounds should be required to have a higher SAT score than other nationalities or colors. I say remove all that information from the application process and admit students based on performance. We are a diverse nation, the numbers will take care of themselves.

I am against racial quotas. Scores and a good application should get people in based on merit.
Or maybe the "content of their character."
Affirmative action was never "necessary". This is a "hearts and minds" issue, not a legislative issue. The consequence is there are a very large number of unqualified people in positions due to their skin color or gender. The fact that Affirmative Action still exists after 40 years confirms that it is an epic failure.

With all due respect, they were necessary back in the 60's. There was instutionalized racism and that needed to be addressed. The reason that they are still in existance has nothing to do with failure of the program, that is failure of the government to admit that institutionalized racism has been fully removed.
I am not arguing that institutionalized racism didn't exist. What I AM arguing is that Affirmative Action was the wrong answer to it. You can't "carpet bomb" people into changing what they believe. "Hearts and Minds".
Deekeman:
I think you are confusing institutionalized racism and racism. Of course affirmative action didn't change hearts and minds, but what it did change was the hiring practices. Companies that didn't hire based on race before those laws were then forced to. That wouldn't have happened without the laws. Did the pure racists still hate those people, of course. But they were able to get the jobs. Once the schools and companies integrated the hearts and minds did start to change once they saw for themselves that their fears were baseless. But to say that minorities would have been hired in the deep south at that time without those laws is simply not believable. That is why they were necessary at that time. But, that time has passed.
I'm not disagreeing with your basic premise. My only point here is that is was the wrong way to solve the problem.
