Quote of the Day - Alan Sorkin Edition

I eat meat, chicken and fish, have shoes and furniture made of leather, and PETA is not ever going to put me on the cover of their brochure and for these reasons Palin thinks it’s hypocritical of me to find what she did heart-stoppingly disgusting. I don’t think it is, and here’s why.

Like 95% of the people I know, I don’t have a visceral (look it up) problem eating meat or wearing a belt. But like absolutely everybody I know, I don’t relish the idea of torturing animals. I don’t enjoy the fact that they’re dead and I certainly don’t want to volunteer to be the one to kill them and if I were picked to be the one to kill them in some kind of Lottery-from-Hell, I wouldn’t do a little dance of joy while I was slicing the animal apart.
Umm, I know what visceral means.  Now, I didn't watch the episode in question, but I have this feeling she wasn't dancing.  She shot one animal that her family will then eat.  Instead of going to the grocery store and pretending that the animal didn't have to be killed by someone, she took care of it herself.  I wouldn't hunt either, but I do understand that for some people it is necessary.  There are many people in this country that live in very rural areas and hunting is the way the feed themselves.  They don't have the luxury of going to the local Whole Foods to buy their organic chickens.  They actually have to do the work and raise them themselves.

What a putz.

I watched the episode. She didn't dance, that I remember, but she was happy. Happy for the meat that would go into the freezer for the family stews this winter; happy that she had a single killshot and that the caribou didn't suffer, or run off wounded to later die a slow painful death.

This is what is so hypocritical about the criticism of Palin killing a caribou. Many, maybe even most of the people writing these attacks on her for this probably don't think anything at all about going out to a nice restaurant and ordering a steak. Or fish. Or lamb. Or veal. It's as if they think those meat dishes were created in a lab or something.

I don't hunt. I have neighbors who do, for meat. I currently have the opportunity to buy meat wrapped in cellophane at the grocery store. If that option ever disappears for any reason, I will hunt to feed my family.
