There is no question that Republicans have done some repectable and noble things over the course of our nation's history.
But the Republican Party, in my view, took a dark and concerted turn toward racism with Lee Atwater and the "Southern Strategy." Indeed, it was a very successful strategy, so much so that the Republican Party has been virtually relegated to a regional (Southern) party.
