The Politically Correct Firing of Paula Dean

The Food Network has announced that they will not be renewing the contract of Paula Dean that expires at the end of this month.  She has been fired.  The Food Network is a private business and they can hire and fire people at will.  That is their prerogative.  But the reason they did it was the mansy pansy politically correct world we have found ourselves living in.

Dean is being sued by a white woman who is claiming that she was exposed to a hostile work environment.  Now, I at one time worked at this non-profit who gave us training on hostile work environments often.  I think I had to sit through that seminar four times in the two years that I worked there.  Like most federal laws there are too broad and far too encompassing to my taste.  Virtually anything can be an offense under these laws.  The woman says that there was porn passed around in the back of  the house in the restaurant and their were people who used racial slurs.  Unless I am mistaken, the lawsuit doesn't claim that Paula Dean herself used those slurs, just that employees did and nothing was done to stop the behavior.

During a deposition that was taken in May, Paula Dean was asked the question if she has ever used the N word.  She said yes and relayed a story about a private conversation that she had in her HOME  with her husband that took place in 1986.  At the time she was working in a bank.  A black man came into that bank, pointed a gun at her head and robbed it.  After this experience she used the N word to describe him to her husband.  This is a firable offense?

Paula Dean is not being accused of using racial slurs at the work place.  Paula Dean is not being accused of discriminatory hiring practices.  Paula Dean was asked if she ever used the word.  Paula Dean was born and raised in the south during segregation.  Does anyone in their right mind think that word never left her lips throughout her life?  If so, those people are fooling themselves.

This isn't about the right or wrong of the word.  This is about does a person have any right to have a personal conversation in the privacy of their own home anymore?  Look the word is offensive, when used by whites.  I don't deny that.  I certainly don't use the word and I cringe on the very rare occasions that I hear it.  But that doesn't mean that The Food Network should feel pressured into firing this woman because of that private conversation.

Be honest, haven't you said things in a private conversation in your home that could easily be found offensive to someone?  Should your place of employment feel that due to that you are unemployable if that conversation ever became public knowledge?

I was going back and forth with others on this last evening and one of  the things that I heard was if I went into work on Monday and used that word to a co-worker I wouldn't have a job on Tuesday.  True enough.  But that isn't what happened here.   I also saw comparisons to the man who fired from the television show Grey's Anatomy for using the word faggot.  Again, that wasn't done in the privacy of his home. That was done in public and if I remember correctly was directed towards a coworker who is gay.  There is no comparing the two.  First and foremost I have a problem with these laws to begin with. But even if I didn't, what happen in that case was public and done in the workplace setting.

Look, you can pass all the laws you like, it won't change people's hearts.  I actually contend it was that people's hearts changing that directly led to the civil rights laws being passed.  What Martin Luther King did so brilliantly was he humanized the people who were being mistreated.  He put a face to the discrimination.  When images of people being attacked by dogs and water hoses were shown in every household across the country, people had to take a look at themselves.  That is when things changed.  The law followed the heart.

People are allowed to be racists if they choose.  There isn't anything that anyone can do about that.  People are allowed to say what they want in their homes.  She is free to spray paint the N word on her living room wall if she wants to.  I wouldn't go to someone's home that did that.  But it doesn't change the right of her to do it.  This is private behavior.

She will be just fine.  She has plenty of money and she certainly won't starve.  But that isn't the point.  The Food Network is yet another victim of political correctness that has run amok.  They are bowing to public pressure because she is now perceived as being a racist.  She used a racial slur in her lifetime.  That isn't a racist make.  Everyone one of us has said things that offend someone else at one point or another in our lives.  That doesn't mean we should be able to allow public pressure to force employers across the country to fire everyone who has.

The Communists Are Coming, The Communists Are Coming....

On Saturday there will be the left's answer to Glenn Beck's Restore Honor Rally.  Oh, looking at the list of "sponsors" was eye opening.

It was not all that long ago I was talking to several people who not only voted for President Obama, but actually think he is doing a good job. One of which grew up in Africa where the government has basically total control of your lives.  He refuses to see that there are forces in this country that would like nothing better than to turn the U.S. into another one of those countries.  What is truly scary to me that I don't think President Obama sees them either.  He doesn't see that he is merely a puppet of those forces.

What  I would like to know is why is the NAACP is working so closely with GLSEN?  The black community regardless of how they may vote are pretty generally social conservatives.  I am not too sure that they would be all that jazzed to find out the NAACP is closely working with an organization that sole purpose it to push sexually explicit information on the acceptability of homosexuality starting with children as young as kindergarten.  Remember the fisting demonstrations done for teenagers?  That was sponsored by this group.

The Communist Party USA is also a sponsor!  What is it supposed to say when a former candidate for the presidency in the democratic party is working this closely with communists?  The squishy middle and the people who have their heads in the sand need to wake up and ask themselves these questions.

We live in democratic republic, people are allowed to their views and are allowed to express them.  But, the issue is how long are going allow them to push this country into their vision?  A vision that has nothing to do with the founding documents of this country.  Here is a good example of what I am talking about:

What Van Jones doesn't understand I have no desire to "run his family" or "run his community".  I want limited government that doesn't run anyone's family.  I am not the one that is trying to tell people what to put their thermostats on.  If they want their a/c turned down to 60 in the middle of summer, have it at.  As long as I don't have to pay the bill it is none of my concern.  I also am not the one that doesn't think that this country is running out of money.  Jones' said that Haliburtion has plenty of money.  Maybe they do, but it doesn't belong to me nor to the US treasury.  I don't want the government telling me what food to eat, what doctor I can go to, or what choices are put into vending machines.  San Francisco is working towards closing pet shops because people decide not to keep hamsters after buying them.  I agree if you get a pet you should be responsible for it, but why are they punishing everyone?  There are plenty of responsible pet owners; even in San Francisco.  If a business can make boatloads of money for themselves and their stockholders, more power to them.  As long as they are doing it honestly and legally, again it is not my business.  Nor, do I think that they owe me some of that money.

There is a part of me that longs for the days that I thought communists only existed in the Soviet Union, and socialism in the guise of government totalitarianism was a thing of the past.

Fact Checking Howard Dean

On Sunday Howard Dean made a statement that Fox News' coverage of the Shirley Sherrod Story was racist, although the facts just don't back up his statements.  Even after being corrected, he goes out the next day and continues his falsehoods.

The racist card is losing steam as more and more liberals speak up and prove the point that victim card is way overused by the left.  Even The New York Times has now admitted that there is no proof that a tea party member used the N word at the obamacare protest in March.  Shirley Sherrod and her husband have proven themselves to continue to look at themselves as victims instead of people living in a country where if you work hard you have the same chances as everyone else.  The reality remains if we were such a racist country either John McCain or Hillary Clinton would be president right now.  The left needs to accept that and move on.  The racist card is no longer going to work.  We have seen the game that they are playing and we refuse to go along.

Moran/Dean Townhall Part 2

I realize that this is a bit late, but a busy schedule of late has kept me from posting these.

With the latest news today of the president making an appearance in our schools across the country, I thought that these two scans are an interesting addition to the debate.

These are just two of the many handouts that I received at the Moran/Dean town hall.

When I was given the hand-out of the email, I was thinking to myself that this could have easily have been faked. I received this right on arrival. Once I started looking around I realized that more than half the people there had on blue shirts and pre-printed signs that said "Thank You" (for what I am not sure) and health care reform now signs.

The little buckslip that is also above is interesting not due to the content, but due to the small codes along the bottom of the piece. In what seems like a lifetime ago, I did direct mail fund-raising. So, I know printing. This buckslip has a version/plate change code along the bottom. As well as the recycled paper code is a union shop label. For those that don't know, union printing shops are relatively hard to find. A very small percentage of shops are unionized.

The version code is of particular interest because it shows that they are printing these for town halls around the country. This is proof of a very well organized effort to fill up the town hall meetings with pro Obama-care people.

In the case of my particular town hall the union members came from Front Royal. Front Royal is more than 100 miles from where I live in Fairfax County, Virginia. The town hall took place at a high school in Reston, VA.

At one point before the people were allowed into the school for the meeting, we (being the people against Obama-care) were surrounded by these union people while they were shouting "no astro-turf". Now, the local people who showed up for this meeting came with home-made signs and we were just wearing our work clothes for the most part. Yet, we get called astro-turf.

I and a fellow 9-12er spoke to a few people who were in the unions. There were at least two different unions there. Shocker!! SEIU was well represented. There was also an elevator union that I have never heard of before.

When asked what they thought of the bill: "No problem, it wouldn't affect them"

Do you think the bill is fair? "That is the way it is".

So I guess when it doesn't affect you, it doesn't matter what it does to the rest of the country. The sad fact of the matter is they are in for a big surprise. This is only a Trojan horse to a single-payer system that will affect them. I wonder if they will regret showing up at these meetings then?

This is also the infamous meeting that Howard Dean admitted that tort reform isn't included in the bill due to the fact that they (the dems) are unwilling to take on the trial lawyer lobby. Even he knows that tort reform needs to be done in order to lower costs.

For those who are interested, my senator, Mark Warner will be hosting a town hall on September 3 at 7 pm that will be streamed live on his website:

If you look carefully, you may just see me there!!

Upcoming Conservative Girl Adventure

For those of you who don't know Jim Moran. He is an embarassment to the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you don't believe me, many die hard libs that live in his district will say the same thing. The only reason he stays in office is that people in his district would rather lose a body part than vote for a republican. He has made statements that come razor close to anti-semetic.
Howard Dean - I can't wait!!!
Upcoming Events

Howard Dean to Join Rep. Moran for Town Hall on Health Care Reform Efforts

When: Tuesday, August 25, 2009

featuring Governor Howard Dean, M.D.,
former Governor of Vermont, Democratic National Committee Chair Emeritus, author, and national grassroots leader on health care. The meeting will discuss current efforts in Congress to reform our nation’s health care system.

Why: Congress is attempting to craft the first major reform of our nation’s health care system in 45 years. With over 47 million Americans uninsured, medical costs rising everyday, and obtaining quality insurance coverage becoming more and more difficult, the time for action has come.

Congressman Moran has invited Dr. Dean to speak at this forum in Northern Virginia, to reflect upon the current effort given his years of experience as a leading health care expert, governor and physician. The town hall will be an opportunity for the Congressman to hear from 8th District constituents on health care, and to clarify what the reform measures in the Congress really mean for Northern Virginians.

*This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, available on a first come first serve basis.
Stay tuned, I will report on this at the end of the month.
