There are also many, many, MANY openly ...But just,

There are also many, many, MANY openly Christian professional athletes -- LONG before Tebow. David Robinson and A.C. Green come to mind.

They weren't targeted like Tebow has been. Why is that?

I must also hasten to add that "coming out of the closet" in one of the four major American sports while you're still active IN that sport is a FAR bigger deal than what Martina or Louganis did. With all due respect, that's just too much of an apples and oranges comparison.

The pertinent question is "Why Tim Tebow?", not "Why Christians?" I say that because Christians in general (in modern-day America) have NOT been targeted like Tim Tebow. So why is that?

Well, my take: Tebow's haters don't hate Tebow. They hate the talking heads that use him -- CONSTANTLY -- as some kind of symbol/martyr for their political movement. After the 1000th time, it starts to get a skosh irritating, especially when we all know that Tim Tebow isn't all that special.

I suspect there are some who will predictably declare that David Robinson and A.C. Green got a pass because they're black, but that's also ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.

Case in point: I'm a HUGE fan of March Madness. At the end of every game this past season (or so it seemed), a young victorious player would immediately make a strong and obviously genuine Christian reference in his post-game interview. Black players, white players, it didn't matter.

Aaron Craft (Ohio State point guard and white guy) prayed in the middle of the court before EVERY game and he got along just fine.

So what makes Tebow different? Besides the fact he's been virtually fetishized by a political movement, he is also more demonstrative when he worships. So yeah, it makes him stand out. Not as a Christian, but as a particularly demonstrative Christian.

He gets TEASED for that -- not hated. There's a difference.

Whenever people behave unusually in public, they get teased for it. Heck, even Michael Jordan got teased for the way stuck out his TONGUE when he'd make a strong move on the court.

Trust me, if this Jason Collins guy does an interview looking like and sounding like RuPaul, he will catch FAR more hell than Tebow EVER did.

When will we see the first ATHEIST athlete "come out"? That's a more interesting question if you ask me.

Of course I won't hold my breath.net observerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11267868386003645693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414290528721230538.post-898920809293258402013-04-29T00:56:56.087-04:002013-04-29T00:56:56.087-04:00Crazy, BUT...

Combine this with modern modes of communication, and yes, those pictures will ultimately end up somewhere, out there, in the cloud. Especially when a guy with limited scruples gets dumped.net observerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11267868386003645693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414290528721230538.post-426671633931441612013-04-29T00:11:33.930-04:002013-04-29T00:11:33.930-04:00I certainly don't want to live in a country wh...I certainly don't want to live in a country where I can't purchase a gun when/if I ever sense a need for one. "I wouldn't...Well-stated words, as usual.

"I wouldn't have gone into the history of civil rights and the republican party..."

Thank you. Oddly, this is a tactic that a lot of GOP-ers/conservatives use consistently (esp. white GOP-ers/conservatives). Apparently it's their way of saying, "See? We're really on your side." But what it really says is "I thought you were too stupid to know this, even though this is a predominantly African-American college campus."

More importantly, as you stated, what WAS isn't nearly as important as what IS. Yes, blacks used to vote GOP 50 years ago. So what? Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority was mostly Democrats 30-plus years ago. What does any of that have to do with 2013?

The party of the Old White South segrationists is obviously not the same party that elected the country's first African-American president. Sure, technically it is. But technically, a lot of things are no longer what they used to be (like AMERICA 50 years ago!)

So why pretend otherwise? Imagine a Democrat approaching Ralph Reed and saying, "You should join us. Jerry Falwell did long time ago."

Maybe the GOP should ask different questions. Like WHY do blacks vote 90% Democrat? Or WHY do Asians, Jews and Latinos vote 70% Democrat?

But if the leaders of the GOP think it's all a simple case of naivete or stupidity, or that these people just want stuff, etc., then they might as well save us all a bunch of time and hang it up now.

In 2008 and 2012, we all heard right-leaning talk show hosts, and others, suggest rather casually and confidently that blacks would likely riot if Obama lost those elections. Their evidence? Who knows?

As a black man, and ex-GOP-er, I personally don't think your rank-and-file white GOP-er/conservative is a bigot -- I really don't. But to suggest that it's virtually unfathomable for an intelligent person to harbor suspicions of that sort is kind of bizarre.

Yet this is exactly what leading voices in the GOP and the conservative movement SEEM to believe. If not, they need to explain themselves, but honestly.

But having said all that, I agree with you. You gotta start somewhere. And for that, Rand Paul deserves encouragement.net observerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11267868386003645693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2414290528721230538.post-51096425407910556772013-04-09T20:27:56.674-04:002013-04-09T20:27:56.674-04:00JACG, big hugs from CA.
