Years ago consumers were outraged that a business would "use" Christmas as a way to sell their goods. Now consumers are outraged when a business refuses to identify with the holiday.
Can you tell me what criteria are used to put a company on one list and not on another? Not trying to be combative, I just want to understand. - N.
Sure. It is done by looking at the ads used during the season. How customers are greeted and thanked while shopping in the store. For example, you can be fired (yes that is true) for saying Merry Christmas by Home Depot employees.
I work in retail and my store encourages you to say Merry Christmas. You don't have to, but that is what they prefer.
Many retailers won't even use the term Christmas tree. They use the generic holiday tree. Please explain to me what other holiday uses an evergreen tree?
This is what I do while at work...I say Merry Christmas to everyone unless they are obviously not Christian. If someone comes in with a hajib on, of course I don't say Merry Christmas to them. I say nothing unless it close to New Year.
What I don't get is why people would find saying Merry Christmas offensive. I lived in Israel for a time when I was younger. I didn't care that people gave me greetings about Jewish holidays. I had to adjust that nothing was open on Friday nights and Saturday during sun up. I was living in a Jewish country. I never found it insulting.
The vast majority of people in this country celebrate Christmas. There is nothing wrong with saying so. Political correctness has run amok. People need to get over it.
Be an atheist if you want, but why force other people to give up a day that is sacred to so many?

Anonymous, what's really insulting is when a retailer is obviously "using" Christmas (as virtually every single one does), but treats the word "Christmas" like it's some kind of embarrassing profanity.
Those retailers are obviously pandering to a hateful, bigoted and intolerant minority of shoppers
hi jcg, did you generate this list?
No Klik I didn't. I can't remember the name of the organization that does it every year, but google it. That is how I found it.
