Oh, Thank Heavens - The Pandas Can Stay

Well, we gave a state dinner to the dictator of a country that doesn't allow free speech, jails dissenters, approves of forced abortions, jails the Nobel peace prize winner, and too many other abuses to mention, but we can keep the Pandas at the National Zoo.  That makes it all worthwhile.

Mei Xiang and Tian Tian

The Chinese and American people work together and create new opportunities together every single day. Mr. President, today we’ve shown that our governments can work together as well, for our mutual benefit. And that includes this bit of news -— under a new agreement, our National Zoo will continue to dazzle children and visitors with the beloved giant pandas.

The Irony of the State Dinner

Earlier this evening we gave a state dinner to a dictator/communist and the head of a government that has no idea what human rights mean.  Of course we should be talking with China, but to give this type of treatment to government that presently is jailing the Nobel peace prize winner is not the message we should be sending to the rest of the world.

He was served lobster, dry aged rib eye (what they couldn't spring for filet mignon?) with buttermilk crisp onions, a pear salad and apple pie.

At least Michelle wore the appropriate color.  Does anyone else see the irony in the Nobel peace prize thing?  The winner of the 09 peace prize is hosting a dinner for the jailer of the 10 winner?

I applaud the Republican leadership that turned down the invitations to this mockery.
