Life of Julia; More Like the Life of Riley

Julia, one of Obama's latest composite women, is featured on Obama's re-election campaign site.

We start at the age of three when Julia heads off to head start.  Too bad for her that studies show that it doesn't work and it  is nothing more than a very expensive taxpayer-funded daycare facility.  The following is from The Brookings Institute, hardly a bastion of right-wing thinking.

 The study demonstrated that children’s attendance in Head Start has no demonstrable impact on their academic, socio-emotional, or health status at the end of first grade. That’s right. If you were a mother who lost the lottery, couldn’t get your child into Head Start, and had to care for her at home, she was no worse off at the end of first grade than she would have been had she gotten into Head Start.

We then progress to start of school thru graduation, and because of Obama are so much better than they will be if Romney takes the helm.  Wait, Arne Duncan had this realization of late:

 “I can honestly say we’ve seen as much, if not more, reform in states that didn’t get a nickel from us than states that did – it’s been fascinating.”

So in other words we are spending $70B a year federally on education and the states do as well as or better than the federal government.  That is money well spent by the feds, wouldn't you say?

We then can move onto the college years.  Julia can feel better because of the cut in federal loan interest rates.  They of course were not offset by any cuts in other places in the budget, but hey that is only a problem when republicans have tax cuts.  No biggie, because the student loan debacle isn't another bubble waiting to burst.  The experts on that are all wrong.

In college Julia has to have surgery.  Obama lists her age at 22 and lucky for Obamacare will force insurance companies to cover her on her parents insurance.  You see they think that republicans don't send their kids to college.  If she is a full-time student 22 and under she was already covered by her parents insurance.  Or if whatever reason she wouldn't be covered her college offers very low-cost insurance plans that would have covered her surgery.  Details, details.

Now, Julia goes out and gets herself a job.  She is covered by the Lilly Ledbetter act for equal pay.  Obviously she isn't working at the White House under Obama, because he doesn't pay the women equal pay.  Oops.

Julia is paying her student loans at the lower interest rate.  Good for her.  Again, nothing offset those costs, but hey Julia is better off today. It is her children who will pay for that lower interest rate down the road.

At 27 Julia isn't ready to have children and her job is not required to cover birth control.  This is just another segment of the imaginary war on women.  If she is paying less on interest for her student loans, she could afford the $9 for the birth control pill.  He also forgets to mention that her (and mine, for that matter) insurance rates are higher because of the "free" stuff she is getting.  But she gets to think they are free.

Now at 31 Julia is finally ready to start her family.  Prenatal care is included in her policy.  Because someone with insurance before Obamacare had all kinds of problems getting prenatal care.  Again, republicans never had babies (remember, we don't like sex) and don't know that there was no rash of insured individuals unable to get prenatal care.  More of the imaginary war on women.

Julia's kid is ready for school now and Race to the Top has solved all the education problems in our country.  See above on how it is not having any effect.  She must not be living in Chicago with their 50% dropout rates.

Julia is now ready to start her business and those evil republicans are going to do away with the small business administration.  Because we all know that republicans aren't very friendly with such organizations as The Chamber of Commerce or anything like that.

Time flies and Julia is now ready for Medicare.  He says it is the republicans that are going to slash it.

The Trustees of the Medicare program have released their annual report on the solvency of the program. They calculate that the program is “expected to remain solvent until 2024, the same as last year’s estimate.” But what that headline obfuscates is that Obamacare’s tax increases and spending cuts are counted towards the program’s alleged “deficit-neutrality,” Medicare is to go bankrupt in 2016. And if you listen to Medicare’s own actuary, Richard Foster, the program’s bankruptcy could come even sooner than that.

Now Julia is ready for Social Security.  Her benefits are going to help her live comfortably.  But only if he is in office.  Since there are no years listed with "Julia", we don't know if she will actually will get her payments since the lockbox has long since been raided and we no longer have enough workers to cover the costs.  But hey, details.

Hey Hilary, Want to Hear About my Non-Working Day?

I was up at 5:15 this morning.  I slept in compared to my usual wake time.  As per my normal morning routine, I made myself a cup of tea.  Took my medication.  Ate something (the time of the day that I get to eat in peace), got dressed.  I checked my e-mail, paid several bills online then made three more breakfasts.  After that, I got two people dressed.  I then cleaned up the kitchen.  Made two beds and fixed up the crib.  I read two books because neither child can read yet.  I then watched them outside in the yard playing with the dog while I swept the kitchen floor.  I also tried to figure out why the dishwasher was leaking again even though I waited for two and half hours last week for someone show up and fix it.  I put away all the dishes.  Put on a Dora the Explorer and made mid morning snacks.  While I was taking the few minutes to myself, I made some calls to make sure that I had someone to bring the baked goods I was about to make to the church board meeting tonight.  I cleaned up after the snacks.(oh, I had to come up with a quick dipping sauce  on the fly for the carrots because I only thought I bought a new bottle of ranch dressing) Changed a diaper. Fought with a six year old about putting socks on.  Forced a two year old to wear a jacket against her will.  Schelped two kids to the bus stop (I no longer drive).  Went to the grocery store.  Listened to a six year old plead his case that Chocolate Cheerios would be far superior to multi-grain.  He didn't win his case.  Better luck next time.  Picked up the dry cleaning.  Found a place to have a little picnic lunch with the three lunches that I had made earlier.  Schelped two kids back to the bus stop.  Realized I lost something along the way, and had to go back to find it (losing Elmer the duck is not acceptable and will only lead to a crying jag and possible sleepless night).  Read another book while sitting at the bus stop. Because I had to go back, I missed the bus and had to wait an additional half hour.  Checked my email and my blog.  Got off the bus.  Schelped two kids to the library for story time.  Once that was finished hunted for the three books each that they are going to take home.  I made another snack.  Started baking for tonight.  Started dinner.  Took the dog for a walk.  Swept the walkway.  Watered the lawn and the flower beds.   Somewhere in there I had to feed four people dinner, give two baths, do some laundry.  Look online to find out how much another dishwasher costs.  Take my own shower (something I have yet to do today).  Feed the dog.  Make several phone calls.  Change diapers again a few times.  Figure out where the three still missing Easter eggs are (note to self, next year make a map).  Read the newspapers.  Put away the Easter decorations.  Fold and put away the clothes that will be washed.  Get two kids to sleep.  (some days easier than others) Try to maintain a marital relationship, and get some sleep.


it was a light day.  

But no, I don't work.

 I am raising children too. But most young American women HAVE to BOTH earn a living AND raise children. You know that don't u?

I can't speak for Ann Romney, but I can speak for myself.  No most do not.  Many choose to work.  It is now the expected thing to do.  The fall back position as it were.  


Let's take some examples.  You for instance.  You stayed home for a period of time.  But your former partner always had a very good career.  You could have stayed home the entire time and didn't.  I know, I know, you were saving the world by going after kids illegally downloading Miley Cyrus.  


Soledad O'Brien has I believe three or four children.  Her husband is a very successful investment banker.  I think he could swing the expenses on his own.


Meghan Kelly is married to an executive of an Internet Security company and retained two residences when they began dating.  I have this feeling that he could afford for his wife to stay home.  


Barack Obama weighed on working mom's of late.  About how Michelle had to work.  Yet he was making a measly $167K when he was a US Senator and she still went to work.  I guess living on that salary for a family of four is really impossible.  The taxes in Illinois must even higher than I thought.  


Paula Zahn's ex-husband was quite wealthy.  She worked when her children were small.  


I know plenty of women who could stay at home, but choose not to.  I had one tell me that they couldn't afford to go to Europe every year if she didn't work.  She might also have to forgo the new Coach handbag she got every season too.  


When you work and are paying for daycare, transportation costs, a wardrobe for your job, possibly dry cleaning costs, lunches, snacks, and all kinds of other expenses, you will find that often it costs just as much to work.  How much are you really making after paying all these additional expenses?  


You can live without 300 channels on cable.  You can live without the really fancy smart phone.  You can live without the extra bathroom that you get with a bigger home,  You don't have to go on expensive vacations.  


It is called prioritizing.  It is called budgeting.  


I don't deny that some women have no choice but to work outside of the home.  But there are plenty of women who don't.  They have bought into this narrative that in order to be fulfilled you must have two degrees and a fancy office.  That staying home and being the caretaker to your children somehow makes you less than.  You are somehow not being the proper role model to your children.  


I can guarantee you, your kids can live without the really expensive sneakers and the trip to Europe in return for you showing up at every school play, every ball game, and being there when they get home from school.  


Every child wants to feel that they are most important thing in the world to you.  


Hilary, the sad part of what you have done over your career is that you have actually limited women's choices, instead of expand them.  Those are the words that you should rightly feel were poorly chosen. The ones you hurled at Ann Romney were meant.  You see, you stayed home for a brief period of time.  Ann made a life being a mother.  Something that someone like you just can't understand.
